USAA Offers $3.25M Class Action Payout for Data Breach: How to Claim

Scam artists and cybercriminals are always looking for new ways to steal money and personal information. Though it’s easier for them to target individuals, that hasn’t stopped other bad actors from hacking companies to get that sensitive data. The United Services Automobile Association, also known as USAA, is just one of many companies that have had a data breach in recent years. As a result, the company will now be paying customers after failing to properly protect their data. Keep reading to learn more about the USAA settlement and if you could be receiving a payment.

What is the USAA settlement about?

USAA is a financial services company that helps military members and their families get insurance, prepare for retirement and partake in other investing services. In 2021, the company was impacted by a data breach that compromised the personal information of roughly 22,600 members.

The company has not admitted to any wrongdoing in the hacking incident, according to Today.com. However, USAA has agreed to a $3.25 million class action lawsuit settlement to help resolve the breach allegations.

As a result, some customers will be able to receive a small financial compensation for the cybersecurity issue.

Who’s eligible for the USAA settlement payout?

If your personal information was accessed, compromised or stolen during the data breach (which occurred around May 6, 2021), you could be eligible for a payout. Not sure if you were impacted? Check your inbox!

AL.com reports that you should have received a message via email or by mail from USAA at some point after the settlement was reached in December 2024. These notices contained both a claimant ID code and a confirmation code.

This documentation is important, as TopClassActions.com shares that “receipt of notification that your data was illegally accessed” is necessary to file a claim!

Though the overall amount being paid by USAA in the settlement has been made public, it’s not clear how much each eligible member will receive. It depends primarily on how many people choose to opt in. However, the settlement does guarantee that all members who file a claim will receive an equal share.

Other large-scale class action settlements have shown the general range of payouts to be around $10-$50 per person. In a recent Facebook settlement payout involving user data, the median payout is expected to be around $35 . (In this case, however, longtime Facebook users will be receiving more than those who are newer to the platform).

How to file a claim for the USAA settlement payout

Any USAA members who had their data compromised have until April 7, 2025, to file a settlement payment election. This ensures they will receive their fair share of the settlement at some point after the final approval hearing, which will be taking place on May 21, 2025.

People who wish to be excluded from the settlement or object to it also have a deadline of April 7. You must submit a written request or objection to follow this route.

You can file a claim here on the USAA settlement website, and confirm or update your mailing information so you can receive a check when payments roll out. There is also an option to choose to receive your payment electronically.

Prefer to mail your claim? Send it to Angeion Group LLC, 1650 Arch Street, Suite 2210, Philadelphia, PA 19103. It must be postmarked no later than April 7 to make the deadline.
