Dr. Mike Gao, President of Smarter Technologies, says that the distinction between clinical care and revenue cycle management (RCM) was a historical decision that is no longer valid. Clinical care is determined partly by what payers cover and what proof they require of the patient condition. In turn, the codes and other information used for billing are summaries of what happened in the clinical visit.
In this environment, doctors have to take into account not just the symptoms and history presented by the patient, but the patient’s environment and insurance coverage. No one can keep all this in mind.
So AI tools such as Smarter Technologies provide a “super-intelligence” that can combine the data needed by the physician. Dr. Ruben Amarasingham, Co-Founder of Pieces Technologies which is now part of Smarter Technologies, says that AI can bring doctors “real contextual understanding of what’s happening to their patients.”
In our recent interview at the HLTH conference, Gao and Amarasingham describe their vision of treatment and revenue cycle management that informs each other, and why Pieces Technologies was purchased by Smarter Technologies. They see the two companies as complementary.
Smarter Technologies can take in lab results, data on orders and medications, and other documentation to find new revenue opportunities in it. The service provided by Pieces Technologies can feed this information back into the clinical interview.
Pieces Technologies products are popular with physicians. Amarasingham says that adoption reaches anywhere from 85% to more than 90% of physicians within six weeks of going live at a site. They can demonstrate savings of 45-60 minutes per shift, and reduced cognitive burden.
Amarasingham expects, over the next few years, for documentation systems to be “behaving more like an assistant,” anticipating needs and alerting physicians.
