Just as Internet providers and transportation companies often struggle with the “last mile” of reaching the customer at the end of the chain, hospitals are too often blind to what’s happening in the patient’s room. This problem drives the recent acquisition of eVideon, smart room solution provider, by TigerConnect, a unified communication platform. In this video we hear about the goals of the combined companies from Sean O’Neal, CEO of TigerConnect, and Jeff Fallon, General Manager of eVideon, a TigerConnect Company.
The traditional communication barriers between the nurses station and the patients’ rooms lead to such problems as alarm fatigue, inadequate information when a urgent event occurs, and nursing burn-out. In addition, patients often don’t know what’s happening in their care, making them anxious and angry. Clinical staff often have to respond to non-clinical requests such as for a glass of water.
eVideon’s devices include smart TVs and other smart displays, bedside tablets, and digital whiteboards, all integrated with the EHR to provide “accurate, real-time information,” according to Fallon.
O’Neal says that the information delivered leads not only to better patient and family satisfaction and better nursing experiences, but tangible clinical benefits such as reduced length of stay and readmissions. The key is “routing communications to the right person at the right time.”
O’Neal says that the merger integrates eVideon with TigerConnect’s existing services: messaging, an in-room nurse call product, and alert/alarm management. They are working on adding AI to produce a “more automated, intelligent environment” combining data from the patient’s room with information from the EHR and real-time location system (RTLS). Goals include automating administrative tasks and delivering predictive insights to optimize staffing, patient flow, etc.
Fallon calls the goal “orchestration” so that information flows without interruption, creating “more situational awareness” for care teams and patients, and leading to both high reliability and efficiency.
Fallon says traditionally, clinicians are “middleware” in communications. Integrated communications and smart systems relieve the burden of non-clinical work by routing it to non-clinical staff, and ultimately allow nurses to spend more high-quality time with patients. These systems also improve accountability and visibility for the patient into the care plan.
