Everyone has been eyeing that April 15 tax deadline, and it has officially arrived. Today is tax day, and while you might be scrambling to file before midnight, certain states are offering an extra extension due to natural disasters in their area.
Earlier this month, storms that caused major flooding and destructive tornadoes turned the lives of residents in states like Arkansas and Tennessee upside down, while the Los Angeles wildfires have majorly impacted the lives of California residents. The IRS has taken this into consideration and offered folks in those states a major tax extension.
“The IRS automatically provides filing and penalty relief to any taxpayer with an IRS address of record located in the disaster area,” the tax agency explained on Monday. “These taxpayers do not need to contact the agency to get this relief.”
What states have been offered a tax extension?
If you are not required to pay by April 15, 2025, there are three other dates that you might be able to file by: May 1, 2025, October 15, 2025, or November 3, 2025. However, you do not get to choose the date—the IRS has done that for you.
See below for a list of states and counties where its residents can file later than the April 15 deadline.
Taxpayers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina have until May 1st to file and pay. For those in Alaska, if you reside in the city and borough of Juneau, you also have the extension. Residents in Chaves County, New Mexico, are also able to extend until May 1st.
For Virginia residents, you may file by May 1st if you live in one of the listed counties: Albemarle, Appomattox, Bedford, Bland and Botetourt counties; Bristol City; Buchanan, Buckingham, Carroll and Charlotte counties; Covington City; Craig County; Danville City; Dickenson and Floyd counties; Galax City; Giles, Grayson, Greene, Lee, Madison, Montgomery and Nelson counties; Norton City; Patrick, Pittsylvania and Pulaski counties; Radford City; Roanoke City; Roanoke, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise and Wythe counties
The October 15th deadline is extended to residents in Los Angeles County in California who were individually or professionally impacted by the wildfires.
For those who reside in the affected areas of Arkansas and Tennessee, the IRS recently offered an extension until November 3, 2025. Prior to these damaging storms, the date to file and pay taxes was the regularly scheduled April 15.
Arkansas and Tennessee are not the only states that have been offered the November 3rd tax extension. This deadline is also available for residents in Kentucky, as well as West Virginia taxpayers in Boone, Greenbrier, Lincoln, Logan, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers, Wayne and Wyoming counties.
If your state does not qualify for a tax extension, you can still get one, but there are other steps to take. If you need the extra time, you must request an extension by April 15, 2025.
