Inflation Refund Checks Are Coming! Here’s Who Will Get Them

In recent years, states have mailed out one-time checks to residents for various reasons, from helping to offset financial problems caused by the pandemic to offering relief for inflation. Most recently, this came in the form of New York state’s inflation refund check, which will be arriving in mailboxes beginning later this month. We have found out everything you need to know about inflation refund checks, including how much New Yorkers are expected to get, and whether other states are offering similar refunds. Read on for all the details.

What to know about New York’s inflation refund check

An inflation refund check is a one-time payment sent out by a state’s tax authority to help taxpayers get some much-needed relief from the increase in sales tax brought on by inflation. The latest refund will be given to 8 million New York state residents who filed taxes in the state in 2023. It will not, however, be sent out to filers who were claimed as dependents on someone else’s taxes.

“The 2025–2026 New York State budget provides for the state’s first-ever inflation refund checks. These one-time payments offer relief to New Yorkers who have incurred increased sales tax costs due to inflation. If you qualify for a payment, you do not need to do anything; we will automatically send you a check,” the New York State website reads.

These checks are expected to ship out beginning at the end of September. According to the state of New York, they “cannot provide a specific delivery schedule, and our Contact Center representatives will not have additional information on the status of your check.” They also shared that people “may receive your check sooner or later than your neighbors, as mailings are not based on zip code or region.”

Are other states offering inflation refund checks?

As of publication, no other states have publicly said that they will be offering their taxpayers inflation refund checks. In the past, Colorado and California have given their residents things like rebate and stimulus checks.

There is also something called a Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD), which is will be sent out to Alaska residents later this year. Those who collect it will get a one-time payment of $1,702, and all they have to do is have lived there for one year and not have any plans to leave.
