IN addition to helping you see more clearly, glasses may also help ease dementia symptoms – a new type of hi-tech glasses, that is.

Scientists from London start-up CrossTech have developed a pair of ‘extended reality’ glasses that have the ability to identify objects and guide users through basic tasks.

The concept is simple – the user looks at an object, such as a kettle, and its name will appear in the lenses, before their eyes.

The glasses can speak to the user via speakers built into the arms, warning dementia sufferers that the water is hot, before guiding them through how to make a cup of tea.

“Our goal is to help people become more capable, more functional,” CrossTech CEO Szczepan Orlins said.

“Ultimately the aim is to enhance independence.

“We believe it can empower you to be more yourself.”

The glasses could also be useful for people who suffer from severe anxiety, for example by offering real-time reassurance to people who struggle to keep social commitments and attend appointments.

The promising new technology will be built and tested over the next year-and-a-half.
