WE’VE all heard of insurance fraud, but some people take things way too far for a payout.

British surgeon Neil Hopper has been jailed for nearly three years after amputating his own legs and lying to insurers about the nature of the cause.

According to the BBC, the Cornwall-based NHS surgeon conducted hundreds of amputation surgeries on other people before a “mysterious illness” forced him to get his own legs removed.

Subsequent investigations found Hopper (an ironic surname considering the circumstances) used dry ice to freeze his own legs so they had to be removed.

Doctors initially treated Hopper for alleged sepsis before surgeons told him he needed to have both legs amputated.

In a dark twist, investigators found Hopper had an extreme “sexual interest in amputation” and possessed videos of bodily mutilation which added extreme pornography charges to his rather unique rap sheet.

Hopper had apparently purchased three videos from a website showing men willingly having their genitals surgically removed.

Judge James Adkin detailed in his sentencing that Hopper filed two fraudulent insurance claims totalling more than 466,000 (A$958,000).

“His motivations were a combination of obsession with removing parts of his own body and a sexual interest in doing so,” said prosecutor Nicholas Lee.
