As Epic has been one of the prominent EHR in the United States for years, its MyChart portal is used by more than 195 million patients (including probably many readers of this article). Its capabilities have grown enormously over the past few years. This video at Epic’s UGM conference interviews Taylor Seale, Software Developer for Epic’s Patient Experience, about about many of the powerful tools that are available to clinicians and patients.
Like AI is impacting most things, it’s true for MyChart as well. AI is enabling conversational interfaces to common practices such as scheduling and resolving questions about billing. Patients can also use AI to look through instructions and turn up key tasks for them, such as exercises to perform. They can ask questions that the agent answers based on knowledge of their medical data. And it can search through information in their chart and from their wearable devices to design a series of questions to ask their doctors, thus avoiding the awkward last-minute issue during a visit.
Hello World employs multiple forms of communication (SMS, email, voice) in order to enable Epic to reach a broader population.
Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) gives MyChart access to wearables, and is useful for episodic needs such as pregnancy or recovery from surgery. Care Companion can monitor treatments at home, such as a blood pressure cuff.
Seale also described how MyChart Central makes access easier, avoiding the need for multiple logins by providing a single password in the individual’s preferred password manager that will soon be able to access all instances of Epic MyChart.
