Ford Recalls Nearly 274,000 Cars for Potential Brake Malfunction

If you drive a Ford, you might want to hit the brakes—literally. The vehicle manufacturer  is recalling more than 270,000 SUVs nationwide due to an issue that may cause faulty brake function while driving, increasing crash risks. Learn everything you need to know before getting behind the wheel and what to do if your car is impacted.

Ford recalls nearly 274,000 SUVs

Ford issued the recall involving 223,315 Expedition and 50,474 Lincoln Navigator SUVs on May 9, due to the front brake lines in the vehicles potentially being “in contact” with the engine air cleaner outlet pipe, according to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The front brake line may have been bent during the engine installation process at Ford’s final assembly plant.

Affected model years are between 2022 and 2024, and the company estimates that 1 percent of these vehicles have the defect. Ford said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this recall, but received 45 warranty reports of front brake line leaks as of April 17, per NHTSA documents.

Expedition and Lincoln Navigator brake issue: What it means for drivers

What does this mean for drivers? A brake line leak may cause a longer than expected brake pedal travel and result in a reduction in the rate of deceleration. If there is a rapid loss of brake fluid or the brake fluid is completely emptied, this can extend the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Signs that your car suffers from this issue may include an increase in pedal travel. With continued driving, a leaking brake line will cause the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir to decrease, which would trigger the red brake warning indicator light.

What to do if you have an impacted Ford

As a remedy, Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect and replace either the front brake line or the air cleaner outlet pipe of impacted vehicles and replace it if necessary, free of charge. Dealer notifications were planned to begin Wednesday, the recall report notes, with owner letters set to be mailed out between May 26 and May 30.

Until then, drivers can find out if their specific vehicle is included in this recall and find more information using the NHTSA site or Ford’s recall lookup. The reference number for this recall is 25S47.
