SSI Payments in 2025: Why You Might Miss a Month (and What to Know)

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) checks provide crucial financial resources to eligible individuals, including those 65 or older, blind or disabled. Understanding the payment schedule is key for recipients to manage their budgets effectively. The Social Security Administration has locked in their calendar, but there are some changes to be aware of in 2025. Here, a breakdown of the SSI payment schedule and what you need to know.

What is supplemental security income?

You may be eligible for SSI payments if you have little or no income, resources, or a disability, blindness or are age 65 or older. Children with disabilities may also qualify. It’s generally for individuals who earn less than $2,019 from work each month or have less than $2,000 (for singles) or $3,000 (for couples) worth of resources, such as vehicles or money in bank accounts, per the SSA.

You must apply to receive SSI payments, and citizens ages 65 or older don’t need a disability to qualify.

SSI checks will be going out in April

If you received two SSI checks in February and none in March, don’t panic—you’ll receive payment in April. The cycle is all part of Social Security changes happening this year, but beneficiaries should have their checks on April 1, 2025. The SSA says to allow three additional mailing days before contacting the agency if you don’t receive your payment on the expected date.

Most payments are on time because they are delivered electronically. They are typically deposited by the first of the month unless that’s a weekend or federal holiday. The scheduling shift started in November 2024, with recipients getting two checks then and none in December.

Approximately 7.4 million Americans who are disabled or have limited financial resources receive monthly social security benefit payments, and about a third also receive payments from Social Security.

When are Social Security payments received?

Standard Social Security payments for older and or retired adults are issued on Wednesdays throughout the month, with specific dates determined by birth date. According to the SSA calendar, you are paid on the second Wednesday of the month if your birth date is between the first and the tenth, the third Wednesday if you were born between the eleventh and the twentieth and the fourth Wednesday if you were born after the twentieth.

However, there are some exceptions. The SSA says children and spouses who receive benefits based on someone else’s work record will be paid the same day as the primary beneficiary.

Beneficiaries who began getting Social Security before May 1997 are paid on the 3rd of the month, and if they also get SSI, that payment comes on the first. If your Medicare premiums are paid for by your state you may also receive your payment on the third of each month.

Similar to how recipients were paid twice in February and not in March, the same will occur in May. The first payment will go out on the first, like normal, and the second payment will go out on May 30. Why is this happening? June 1 falls on a weekend.

The double payments will happen two more times after that, twice in August and twice in October, meaning no checks in September or November.

The exact dates for payment are listed below:
