Our mom, Ann, was 87 years old, healthy and independent. She lived with my sister, Karen, for the past nine years, after moving to Texas from Long Island, New York, to be closer to us and our families.

Dad had passed away years earlier, and we all missed him. Mom would often say that we, her three children and seven grandchildren, should not be sad when she died, as she knew she’d be in Heaven with our dad.

In July, Mom had a heart attack and died four days later. We prayed for a sign that she was finally with Dad.

Two weeks later, full of grief, and wandering around lost in the home she had shared with Mom, Karen got the sign we had prayed for.

On a lonely Sunday morning, Karen stepped out onto the front porch and saw two doves sitting on the doormat. They stayed and let her walk outside. They were so still, just looking at her. They maintained eye contact as she stared at them in wonder. Then they turned and looked back at Karen before flying off together. They were pure white doves, not the birds we usually see around the house. Karen felt deep peace.

The next day, still in awe, Karen was telling me about this occurrence while we were sitting in our mom’s bedroom. It was then that we noticed the ceramic figurine that had been on Mom’s nightstand for all of our lives: two ceramic white doves.

Karen remembers that Mom had told her that was the first gift Dad had given her when they were newly married, 67 years ago. They were now giving us both the sign we needed. They are together forever.
