Friday, March 14: Learn About Butterflies Day

We asked Randi Minetor, author of Backyard Birding & Butterfly Gardening, for the best ways to attract butterflies to your yard. Her easy advice? Try placing a flat stone and a bit of soil inside a shallow aluminum pan and setting it among your garden flowers. “Butterflies often gather around a puddle or a muddy spot to feed on nutrients in the soil, so they will come to a water feature if they have a dry place to land while they get a drink,” she explains.

Also helpful: Offer the winged wonders a snack! She recommends putting out cherries, berries and orange halves. Not only will you attract birds, but “it may also bring butterflies in for a sample,” she adds.

Saturday, March 15: National Peanut Lovers Day
