If you thought stimulus checks were a thing of the past, it’s a good idea to double-check your 2021 tax returns. Why? Earlier this year, the U.S. government initiated a series of Recovery Rebate Credit payments given to taxpayers who missed out on claiming previous stimulus checks. And the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) began distributing up to $1400 to eligible individuals in December 2024, with more money being given later this month. Curious if you’ll receive a payment? Keep reading for the details on the 2025 stimulus check and how to know if you’re eligible.
All about the 2025 stimulus checks
Unlike the payouts in tax year 2021, these 2025 stimulus checks—money the government sends out to help people when the economy takes a hit—are not federal. Instead, they’re for individuals who missed the Recovery Rebate Credit in 2021.
The IRS announced in December that it would issue automatic payments of up to $1,400 to about one million taxpayers. “This applies to people who didn’t claim the credit on their 2021 tax return but met the income limits at the time— $75,000 or less for single filers, and $150,000 or less for married couples filing jointly,” says Paul Carlson, CPA, managing partner at Law Firm Velocity.
To receive payment, you only have to make sure that your 2021 tax form is filed by April 15, 2025.
What is the Recovery Rebate Credit 2025?
The Recovery Rebate credit is refundable for individuals who did not receive one or more stimulus payments. “It’s basically a way to catch up on a missed stimulus check,” says Carlson. “If you didn’t get the full [payment] amount you were eligible for in 2021, this credit ensures you get what you’re owed when you file your taxes.”
2025 stimulus check eligibility
Carlson says that the IRS is reaching out if you’re eligible for the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. “They’re sending letters to people who qualify, but if you’re unsure, your best bet is to file a 2021 federal tax return by April 15—even if you missed it before.
You can also visit the IRS website and use the “Get My Payment” tool. “You need to enter some basic information, including your Social Security number and filing status, and it’ll tell you if you qualify and how much you might get,” adds Carlson.
How to calculate your 2025 stimulus check
You need to finalize two key calculations to see if you qualify for the $1,400 stimulus check. First, you need to figure out your adjusted gross income, which is how much money you made for the year while considering any deductions. Deductions may include alimony payments, an IRA retirement account, and more.
It’s pretty simple for most folks—$1,400 per eligible person (including dependents), and if you’re married and filing jointly, that doubles,” says Carlson.
Once you know your income, it’s time to enter your filing status, adjusted gross income and number of dependents into a stimulus calculator to see if you’re likely to receive the full stimulus check.
Wondering how to get a bigger payment? Carlson says that all depends on future legislation and your income from the past couple of years.
Stimulus check scam prevention: what to look out for
With the new information circulation about stimulus payments, it’s important to be wary of scams. “If you’re expecting a check, keep an eye on official updates from the IRS and your state government,” says Carlson. “There’s always misinformation floating around, and the last thing you want is to miss out because of bad info.”
Additionally, the IRS won’t contact you via phone, email or social media to request personal information and payment, so be cautious about clicking links and sharing details with unofficial sources.
